Deputy Director of the International Security Program at CSIS
Julianne Smith is a fellow and deputy director of the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Before coming to CSIS, Ms. Smith worked at the German Marshall Fund as a program officer on the Foreign Policy program.
Prior to this position, she worked at the Association of the U.S. Army and on the 1999 Kosovo conflict and post-conflict reconstruction at the British American Security Information Council.
She has also worked in Germany, both for the Conflict Prevention Network at the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik and the German Parliament — where she worked on the first round of NATO enlargement for Parliamentarian Rudolph Seiters.
Ms. Smith has received a number of fellowships and scholarships including the Public Policy Fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship for work in Germany — and the Fredin Memorial Scholarship for study at the Sorbonne in Paris.
She has been a guest on CNN, CNN International, BBC, Fox News Channel, Canadian Broadcast Corporation, CNBC’s Hardball — and ARD in Germany.
Her commentaries have appeared in the Washington Post, the San Diego Union Tribune, Defense News, De Defensa, Die Tageszeitung and Der Tagesspiegel.
Ms. Smith holds a BA in French and Communications from Xavier University — and an MA in International Relations from American University.
