Sunil Khilnani

Professor of Politics at Johns Hopkins University

Sunil Khilnani is a professor of politics and director of South Asia Studies in the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, in Washington D.C.

Mr. Khilnani was born in New Delhi and educated at Trinity Hall and King’s College, Cambridge. Before taking up his current position at SAIS in 2002, he was professor of politics at Birkbeck College, University of London.

Mr. Khilnani has also been a Fellow of Christ’s College, Cambridge. He was a visiting professor at Seikei University, Tokyo and has held a Leverhulme Fellowship from 1998 to 2000. Mr. Khilnani was also a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington D.C.

His publications include “Arguing Revolution: The Intellectual Left in Postwar France” and “The Idea of India” 3rd edition which is published by Penguin and Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

He is the co-editor of “Civil Society: History and Possibilities” and “Reinventing Democracy” and has also written the “Introduction” to Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography.

Mr. Khilnani is a member of the editorial boards of Critique Internationale, Economy and Society, Political Quarterly, and Prospect.

He is currently writing a biography of Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.
