Anders Wijkman
Member of the European Parliament
Anders Wijkman has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999, where he currently serves on the environment, climate and the development cooperation committees. In addition, he is the chairman of Globe EU, a bi-partisan environmental network of European Parliament members.
Prior to his EU legislative experience, Mr. Wijkman was a member of Sweden’s parliament from 1971 to 1978. Following his tenure in government, he served as secretary general for the Swedish Red Cross for nearly ten years — from 1979 to 1988.
Mr. Wijkman is also involved with a number of historical and policy organizations, including the Club of Rome — a global think-tank of scientists, economists, businessmen and civil servants — where he is currently vice president. He served as the chairman of the board of the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm from 1998 to 2005.
A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Mr. Wijkman received his B.A. at Stockholm University in 1967. He is the author of several books on disaster prevention, sustainable development, HIV/AIDS and EU cooperation.
